Biography
John Davies was born in 1839 to Stephen Davies and Sarah James in the small settlement of Duffryn or Dyffryn, near the current area of Pentrebach, in the southeast of Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan County, Wales.  Merthyr Tydfil was the largest city in Wales at the time and a big coal mining area.  John's father worked as a cinder filler and the family was undoubtedly poor7.  The father may have known how to read and write, however - A rarity for British poor at that time.
The family lived on Quarry Row for the next 20 years8.  John's little brother George was born in April of 1841 and died that same year9.  Two girls were born into the family in 1848 (Ann) and 1849 (Sarah)10.  John also had a sister about 6 years older than him named Martha11.  Martha married a Samuel Maclean in 1856, but she died around 1860 before John was married.
John's family was living in Merthyr Tydfil on Quarry Street in 1860 when John married Elizabeth.  John could not sign his own name and thus was probably illiterate.  They were married in the register's office and not in a church.  John's parents also did not sign the marriage certificate as witnesses, although they were both still alive (Stephen was listed as still working as a cinder filler).  John's brother-in-law, Samuel Maclean, was a witness to the marriage12.
John and Elizabeth had two children in the Merthyr area in 1861 and 1863.  Their third child, George, died shortly after he was born in 1865.  In the 1871 Wales census, the family was living in Faenor (Vaenor or Vaynor) in Cefn Coed, slightly northwest of Merthyr Tydfil city.  John and Elizabeth had four children at the time, Joseph (10), Thomas (8), Margaret (4), and Reese (10 months).  John was working as a shearer at the time13.
In 1873 the family emigrated to the United States14.  Here John began to go by John D. Davis, the middle initial possibly standing for 'Davies'.  Elizabeth was determined to heed the Church's call for members to come to Zion in the western US, and so they emigrated to America.  They spent the next seven years working in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, presumably to earn enough money to travel west to be with the others of their faith in the Rocky Mountains.  Lackawanna County had a disproportionately large number of Welsh immigrants living in it.  There is a Hyde Park Cemetery in the county which used to be named the Welsh Cemetery.  The couple had five more children while in Pennsylvania: Stephen (1874), David (1875), Sarah (1876), William (1879) who died the following year, and Abraham (1880).  John was naturalizaed a US citizen in 187815.
Sometime before 1883, the family moved to Preston, Idaho, a predominantly Mormon and heavily Welsh community.  Here their final child, Isaac, was born in 1883, and Margaret met her future husband and was married to him in 1883.  The family was active in their faith during the Idaho years.  John was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 189316.  According to temple records transcribed on the day he received temple ordinances, this was a rebaptism.  However, there is no indication he was ever baptized before that date.  Several children were baptized in Idaho and later married in the LDS temple in Logan, Utah.  John and Elizabeth received temple ordinances in 189917 to allow them to be sealed as a family for eternity, according to Mormon beliefs.  John was working as a farmer in 1900.  In 1910 they were living next to their son David and his family, who may have helped take care of them18.
John died in January 1912 in Preston and is buried in the Preston Cemetery there.  His wife of 52 years survived him, as did 9 of their 12 children.  He lived a poor life, but was a faithful pioneer for his family.

Biography
Elizabeth Lewis was born in 1842 to Thomas Lewis and Margaret Jones in Troed-y-rhiw, in the southeast of Merthyr Tydfil in Glamorgan County, Wales.  Her father worked as a furnace filler when she was born, meaning the family was poor23.  Elizabeth's mother's name was signed for her on the birth certificate, so neither of the parents could likely read or write.
In 1851, Elizabeth's family was living in Merthyr Tydfil24.  Her father was 32 and worked as a limestone breaker.  Her mother was 30.  Elizabeth, age 8, was listed as having 3 younger brothers: John (7), Thomas (4), and David (2).
When Elizabeth was married to John in 1860, her family was living in Merthyr Tydfil on Yew Street25.  Elizabeth could not sign her own name and probably couldn't read either.  Thomas Lewis was still working as a limestone breaker.  Some researchers believe Elizabeth joined the LDS Church in 1851, and that her family was converted and joined in the late 1840's or early 1850's.  I have yet to find any official sources for this, although Elizabeth was rebaptized in 1881.
When Elizabeth received her temple ordinances in 189926, she appears to have been accompanied by a Margaret Thomas, born 11 May 1817 in St. Quary's Hill, Glamorgan, Wales27.  It is not clear if this is the same Ann Thomas (her mother-in-law?) who witnessed her marriage in 1860.  There were no other Welsh immigrants participating in the temple session that day in Logan, Utah.
Elizabeth lived 10 years longer than her husband, dying in Preston in February, 1922.  On 14 Jan 1916, Elizabeth was sealed to 6 of her 11 children in the Logan temple, an experience that must have been a great joy to her.  She travelled much and suffered much during her life, but she left a great legacy of sacrifice and faith to her posterity.

Footnotes
  1. All census and other official documents list John as simply John Davies while he is in Wales.  His wife and children also have the last name of Davies in Wales. Once the family comes to America, they take on the name of Davis, which appears on all official documents after 1873 when the family arrived in the USA.  John's middle initial of 'D' only appears in records after 1873 and may stand for the 'Davies' name he left behind.  See the following census records

1861 Wales Census, Merthyr Tydfil Township, Glamorgan County, Class: RG9; Piece: 4055; Folio: 7; Page: 13; GSU roll: 543227, Household 57. [This is a readable film.]
1871 Wales Census, Cefn Coed Township, Glamorgan County, Class: RG10; Piece: 5397; Folio: 20; Page: 30; GSU roll: 849483, Household 159. [This is a readable film.]

  2. Elizabeth received her own endowment and was sealed while still alive.  The surname she listed on those records was Lewis.  See FamilySearch International Genealogical Index v5.0, Film number 458830.
  3. There has been general confusion about John's year of birth.  The 1861 and 1871 Wales census records put it at 1839, as does his tombstone.  John and Elizabeth's marriage certificate on 9 Jun 1860 lists John as 21.  The 1900 and 1910 US census records however list his birth year as 1840.  A hand-written book of LDS ordinances for John Davies and his family also lists his birth as 1940, although there is no date on the book nor author (it is presumably written by Reese John Davis Sr. because of the detail of the information on his own life).  The LDS ordinances of endowment and sealing to his wife performed while he was alive list his birth year as 1843.  The 1880 US census lists it as 1846, although that census has both John and Elizabeth considerably younger than listed anywhere else, possibly to gain advantage as working immigrants in Pennsylvania.  The children's ages have not been adjusted in that census.

We believe the 1839 date to be correct because John listed his parents as Stephen Davies and Sarah James, who are the parents on a birth certificate for a John Davies born 31 March 1839.  There are very few couples in Wales during the 1830's and 40's with the names of Stephen and Sarah Davies, and only one that has a child named John born in Glamorgan County around 1840.  John wrote himself that he was born in Glamorgan Co., and both Wales census records list Glamorgan as well.  That record, combined with the marriage certificate and early Wales census records seem more likely to be accurate than the varying records of John's later life.
